Why Parakeets Need a Balanced Meal
Parakeets are known as small but vigorous birds. Apart from being agile, these birds are very smart, thus they require lots of stimulation and playtime than what most people think. Because of those things, they need a healthy and balanced diet everyday. These pets also like the vegetables and fruits. They could use some seeds or some nuts to as a part of their healthy diet.
Actually, humans and birds can share the same kinds of fruits. Pears, apples and oranges are just a few examples. If it is their first time to eat these fruits, you can give them a slice and they will surely love it. You can use the fruit-feeding session as bonding time for you and your budgie. This session is not just feeding time but it is actually a moment where you establish trust with the little budgie. Instead of fruits, you can hand feed the little bird some seeds and nuts. Remember that these birds want vegetables as well. So, you can give the little pet, a lettuce leaf.
Your pet’s diet could use a lot of green vegetables. There are many parakeets that love the taste of kelp or mustard leaves. More often than not, feeding parakeets leafy greens is not difficult because they can easily acquire a taste for those food. It must be considered, though, that not all green leafy vegetables are good for your bird. Certain leafy vegetables can cause liver or calcium deficiency problems. Ask your parakeet’s veterinarian first about which leafy greens to give and which ones to avoid.
A well balanced diet is also crucial when parakeet’s begin to breed. In this period, female parakeets can use a mineral lick or a cuttlebone, which can be placed somewhere in the cage. A very healthy bird is likely to produce bouncing chicks.
So the next time you go out to buy food for our parakeet, buy seeds, vegetables and fruits. There are so many of these foods to choose from and make part of your pet’s nutritional plan. Your little acrobatic winged buddy will be glad to have variety in his or her diet.
