Why a Fiction Author Should Increase their Vocabulary
There is a vocabulary that fiction authors use regularly. There are other vocabulary one can learn so that you always have words that you can choose from when writing. To make the writing more appealing, a fiction writer should use verbs, nouns, modifiers and adjectives when writing. Good writing is not only how well you put the words together, it is also about the words themselves. It is easy to get into a novel that is engaging when you read it. The novel should be reread after you enjoyed reading it the first time. The goal is to examine how the work was written. The aspect of writing is where you should focus on, they include how the plot and characters were developed and the technical aspects like grammar. American and British authors write differently, this you should know.
The difference in use of some words, punctuation and spelling are the places these authors differ. For instance, among is an American word and amongst is a British word. Writing for either the American readers or British readers each have their standard of rules that you should stick to.
Fiction authors can and should expand the base of the vocabulary that they use. Anytime when they are reading another author’s work, they can do this. A new vocabulary that you come across should be noted. Despite it being general knowledge, most authors do not do this. Besides it being a logical thing to do, it is one way of building your vocabulary. To make categories that suits your needs, get a notebook or any other means you desire. Anytime people are talking or when there is a dialogue on the TV or when you are reading, you should concentrate and listen keenly. Take note of the verbs, nouns, modifiers and adjectives or any compound nouns that are being used. Chances are you will be surprised of the words you already use, the ones you didn’t know about and those you never thought of using. Keeping a list of the words or phrases that your characters might occasionally use is important. For example for the eyes, use a phrase like ‘her eyes surveyed the room’.
Taking note of such words and phrases gives you the ability to be creative in the description of what is going on internally and externally regarding your characters. When you make use of the lists that you kept, you will be able to write authentic and creative vocabulary. The first draft you make should use this list.
